Before you attempt to use your fetal doppler, you should know a few things. Firstly, it’s recommended that you wait until 12 weeks of pregnancy to try to hear your baby’s heartbeat. Although it’s possible to hear it starting at 8 weeks, it’s unlikely and waiting may cause you to become impatient or worried. As a general rule, the bigger the baby gets, the easier it will be to hear his or her heartbeat. The sound you hear will also depend on your size and the position of the fetus.

How to Use a Fetal Doppler: Steps

  1. Before you use your doppler, consider that some women report hearing the heartbeat easier in the morning since that’s when the belly is typically the least bloated. Using the doppler while you have a full bladder can also make the heartbeat easier to hear.
  2. To start, lie with your back down on a flat surface. Expose your abdomen like you would during a regular ultrasound.
  3. Apply a blob of ultrasound gel or other lubricant to your lower belly. Since the gel will reduce static, use a generous amount.
  4. Place the doppler probe in the gel and turn the device on.
  5. Starting from your pubic bone, gently glide the probe upwards towards your belly button. Slowly rock the probe, covering every part of your stomach so that you find the fetus.
  6. If you hear a heart beat in your earphones and the display shows a heart beat per minute (BPM) of about 120 or higher, you’ve likely found your fetus. Some women say the sound is similar to galloping horses.
  7. If after a few minutes you cannot find your baby, shut the device off and try another time. You may need to wait for the baby to grow bigger or switch positions.
  8. After you’re finished, clean off the probe to avoid build up. You may choose to wipe it with 70% ethanol and let air dry or simply wipe it with a clean, dry cloth. Do not submerge the device in water (except waterproof models) or apply cleaning chemicals.

    Is my baby’s heart rate normal?

    If your LCD display screen shows a heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute, it is probably picking up on your own veins and arteries. A healthy fetus has a heartbeat of around 120 to 180 (yes, it’s a lot faster than adults!). If the heartbeat fades, it could mean he or she is switching positions.

    I hear two heartbeats. Why?

    Hearing two heartbeats could mean one of two things: You’re hearing the same heartbeat in two places or you’re having twins. So, how do you tell which it is? If you’re in the later stages of pregnancy and the two heartbeats are within 10 beats per minute of each other, it’s probably just one fetus.

    Why can’t I hear anything? Does it mean my baby is having complications?

    If you can’t pick up your baby’s heartbeat, it doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is unhealthy. It could mean they are too small or are in a position that makes it hard for the doppler to detect. The heartbeat may also be masked my stomach noises or your own heartbeat. At times, you will hear the heartbeat easier and stronger, and that’s normal. Before 12 weeks, it may be especially difficult to detect any heartbeat. However, if you have a feeling something is wrong, contact your physician.

    Can a fetal doppler replace ultrasound appointments?

    Although an at-home fetal doppler works similar to an ultrasound, it is not the same. You must still attend routine ultrasounds and appointments to ensure you and your baby’s health. Since your doctor is skilled at reading ultrasounds, the at-home device shouldn’t be viewed as a replacement but instead as a tool to use in between checkups.

What are body fat scales, and how accurate are they?

Body fat scales are devices that a person can use to measure their weight and body composition at home. The term “body composition” refers to the relative percentages of fat, muscle, and water inside the body.

Understanding how much fat and muscle make up the body can be an important tool for people looking to track their overall health. In this article, we provide information on how body fat scales work and whether they give an accurate estimate of a person’s body fat percentage (BFP). We also outline alternative methods for estimating BPF.
How do they work?  Body fat scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to estimate the relative percentages of different tissues and substances within the body. BIA sends a weak electrical impulse through the body. The impulse encounters varying levels of resistance or “impedance” from the different tissues and substances. The scales then use a mathematical formula that incorporates the value for electrical resistance with information about a person’s age, height, and gender. People typically supply this information via a smartphone or other electronic device. The mathematical formula then estimates the relative percentages of the following:
  • total fat
  • muscle
  • water
  • bone density
Fat offers more resistance than either muscle or water. As such, higher resistance values tend to result in calculations of a greater percentage of body fat.
Are they accurate? 
Body fat scales provide a rough estimate of a person’s BFP. However, they are not very accurate. A 2016 study found that the BIA method of measuring body composition is accurate when using standard, published mathematical formulas. However, the body fat scale that the researchers tested did not use accurate formulas to estimate BFP. Therefore, it produced inaccurate estimates. Also in 2016, Consumer Reports conducted a test of six different body fat scales. First, the researchers used a lab-based machine called a Bod Pod to take accurate body fat measurements. They then compared these results with the data that they retrieved from the home-use BIA body fat scales. In this study, the home-use body fat scales either overestimated or underestimated BFPs. The most accurate readings were off by about 21%, while the least accurate were off by about 34%.
Pros and cons of using them 
The primary advantage of using body fat scales at home is convenience. The scales are easy and safe to use. Also, as long as the scales are consistent in their measurements — even if these are inaccurate — they can help the person roughly track the effectiveness of their exercise regimen or diet over time. However, body fat scales are not an accurate method for estimating BFP. According to doctors, they typically overestimate or underestimate BFP by a large amount. Home body fat scales also cannot show where a person’s body fat is stored. The location of body fat is an important consideration when assessing a person’s susceptibility to disease. For instance, a 2016 studyTrusted Source found an association between increased abdominal fat and a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Body fat vs. BMI
Body mass index (BMI) uses a person’s height and weight to get a general idea of whether their weight is likely to affect their health. BMI also does not take into account a person’s muscle mass. Exercise can help a person lose fat and gain muscle. As muscle is denser than fat, a person’s body weight may actually increase as a result of exercise. A person could use both BFP values and BMI values to help guide their dietary and exercise choices. If either value is higher than average, a person should see their doctor. Alternative methods
A person can use several different methods to estimate their BFP. Some are suitable for use at home or in a doctor’s office, but others must take place under tightly controlled laboratory conditions. Typically, the most expensive options provide the most accurate estimates.

Some methods that people can use to estimate their body fat at home include:


Calipers are tools that measure the distance between two sides of an object. A person can use calipers to measure the thickness of skin folds on different parts of the body. The accuracy of caliper measurements depends on the experience of the person using them.

Handheld BIA devices

Handheld BIA devices use electrical impulses to estimate BFP. As with step-on body fat scales, they are not very accurate.

Laboratory options

The following body fat measurement tools require special machinery and provide much more accurate results:

Bod Pod

A Bod Pod is a machine that calculates a person’s body density. It does this by combining two measures: a person’s mass or “weight” and their volume. A person sits inside the Bod Pod, which uses highly accurate scales to measure their weight. Meanwhile, special sensors detect the volume of air that the person’s body displaces based on air pressure changes that occur in the Bod Pod. This value represents the person’s body volume. The Bod Pod uses the weight and volume values to calculate the person’s body density. A technician can then use a mathematical formula to estimate the person’s BFP. A Bod Pod requires specially trained operators, who tend only to use it in research laboratories.

Hydrostatic underwater weighing

Hydrostatic underwater weighing (HUW) calculates a person’s body density and body volume to estimate their body composition. HUW works by comparing a person’s weight on dry land with their weight underwater. It also measures the volume of water that a person’s body displaces when they sit inside a tank of water. The above values make it possible to determine the person’s body composition, including their BFP, based on the principle that fat is less dense than muscle.

Checking blood pressure at home pays off

At every step of the way, people in the home monitoring group had more success getting their blood pressure under control than people who had received only usual care. At the end of the trial, 72% of those doing home monitoring had their blood pressure under control, compared to 57% of the usual care group. The benefits persisted six months after the program had ended. The results, , are similar to the findings of previous studies on home blood pressure monitoring. The need for home monitoring

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 3 adults in the United States has high blood pressure, and half of them don’t have it under control. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States. Even though the American Heart Association and other organizations have called for greater use of home blood pressure monitoring, it isn’t yet widespread. One reason is that insurance coverage for such programs still lags. Another is that full-fledged efforts like the one in Minnesota could cost $1,350 per person.

Monitoring at home

But you don’t need a special program. You can buy a good home blood pressure monitor at a pharmacy or online merchant for anywhere from $50 to $100. (Ask if your insurance company will cover the cost.) A few things to look for:
  • an automatic monitor that doesn’t require a stethoscope (it’s easier to use)
  • a monitor that takes the blood pressure reading using a cuff that fits around the upper arm;
  • a read-out large enough for you to see the numbers;
  • a seal from an organization such as the British Hypertension Society, International Protocol for the Validation of Automated BP Measuring Devices, or Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).

An active paramedic, Elkins also responds to 911 calls and serves as a medical specialist with Maryland Task Force 1, a FEMA urban search and rescue team. First-hand experience has shown her how important having a well-stocked and maintained first-aid kit can be. “There are certain things you need to have at hand in the moment. In a crisis, you’re not going to have time to go to the store to get what you need,” Elkins points out. Take bleeding-control training to use such and prepare for a bleeding emergency. Remove, throw away, or use and replace any supplies before they expire. Set a calendar reminder on your smartphone to update the supplies in your kit every six months and/or as the healthcare needs of your family change.

Customize your kit

Think about the healthcare needs of your family when putting together a first-aid kit. For example:
  • If you have a family member with a severe allergy, include antihistamine medicine and an epinephrine injector.
  • If you have elderly family members with fragile skin, including a roll of paper tape can be useful for protecting delicate skin.
  • If you or a family member lives with diabetes, include a juice box, glucose tablets and gels, and an emergency glucagon injection kit.

Elkins also suggests attaching a note to your kit with instructions on where to find other items around the house and how to act in specific emergencies. For example, you can use a note to remind you where sugary drinks and foods are kept in case of a diabetic emergency. A person who is using a first-aid kit in an emergency might need to call 911 for assistance. Having the home or office address written on the outside of the kit itself can give users a handy location reference for 911 operators.

He saved his coworker’s life because he made the right decision and took action.”
